We at Dermatology Specialists of Kansas City use Botox and Jeuveau.

What are neuromodulators?

Neuromodulators are broadly defined as substances which alter the way nerves communicate with each other. Botulinum toxin is one of these substances and is the active ingredient in wrinkle-reducing products. Examples of neuromodulators on the market include Botox, Jeuveau, Dysport and Xeomin. The injection of botulinum toxin is popular for reducing wrinkles and rejuvenating the aging face. When a small amount of this neuromodulator is injected into a muscle, it blocks nerve signals that tell your muscles to contract. It temporarily weakens or paralyzes specific, targeted facial muscles and softens or eliminates wrinkles in the skin for a few months.

Neuromodulators are popular for cosmetic procedures, with more than 6 million treatments administered each year. Botulinum toxin for cosmetic use was approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in 2002, for treating frown lines in adults 65 and younger. Neuromodulators also are frequently used to reduce other wrinkles on the face and neck, such as crow’s feet, brow furrow, and forehead lines.
