Neuromodulators (Botox, Jeuveau)
“Kansas City’s Botox Specialists”
We at Dermatology Specialists of Kansas City use Botox and Jeuveau.
What are neuromodulators?
Neuromodulators are broadly defined as substances which alter the way nerves communicate with each other. Botulinum toxin is one of these substances and is the active ingredient in wrinkle-reducing products. Examples of neuromodulators on the market include Botox, Jeuveau, Dysport and Xeomin. The injection of botulinum toxin is popular for reducing wrinkles and rejuvenating the aging face. When a small amount of this neuromodulator is injected into a muscle, it blocks nerve signals that tell your muscles to contract. It temporarily weakens or paralyzes specific, targeted facial muscles and softens or eliminates wrinkles in the skin for a few months.
Neuromodulators are popular for cosmetic procedures, with more than 6 million treatments administered each year. Botulinum toxin for cosmetic use was approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in 2002, for treating frown lines in adults 65 and younger. Neuromodulators also are frequently used to reduce other wrinkles on the face and neck, such as crow’s feet, brow furrow, and forehead lines.
Neuromodulator, Botox, and Jeuveau FAQ
-
The injections can be done quickly, require no recovery time, and are not as complicated as many other cosmetic procedures for the face. With the patient sitting on the exam table, the areas to be treated are cleaned with alcohol. A tiny needle is placed into strategic areas of the forehead, crow’s feet or furrow. The areas are cleaned again, and the procedure is finished. It takes between 1-5 minutes and there is minimal discomfort. There may be bruising, but this is not typical.
-
For the remainder of the day after your treatment, do NOT rub or massage the treated areas and avoid exertion. The next day, normal activities may be resumed.
-
It can take 3 to 10 days before you notice an effect from the neuromodulator. The full effect may take up to 2 weeks. The results may last from 3 to 4 months on average but may last up to 6 months. After that, you will begin to see the wrinkles slowly return.
